There’s a good reason for the abundance of idioms involving the flow of time in the English language.

Without it, we wouldn’t be able to sustain ourselves. In many respects, time dictates the course of our lives; it sets imperceptible limits on what we can do.

Because we only have 24 hours a day to get things done, mastering the art of time management is essential for everyone who wants to be more effective.

It’s surprising because time management is a problem for a lot of people, myself included.

As I’ve learned, I usually tend to take more time than I need to complete a task.

The law that says “work expands to occupy the time available for its completion” has a name: Parkinson’s Law.

To put it another way, you only have as much time as you have available to finish a task.

However, for those of us who prefer not to be continuously rushing to meet a deadline, there are a number of procedures and tools you can use to better manage your time and stay on track.

What Happens If You Don’t Manage Your Time Well?

It’s possible that poor time management will catch up with you. When it comes to managing your time, you may have difficulty with the following issues:

Chronic lateness

If you’re always late to your appointments, it’s a symptom that you don’t manage your time well.

If you’re a few minutes late to one appointment, it’s likely that you’ll have to reschedule the next one, too.

Constant tardiness has a wide range of negative consequences.

It can make it difficult to collaborate with others, causing you to speed through your own tasks, and irritate others who depend on you.

Inability to do well in the workplace or in school

When you don’t manage your time well, your bad performance at your job or school may be a result.

That financial study your boss requested may be put on hold because of the time you spend perfecting your email.

If you can’t focus on studying because you’re watching TV, you’re not going to do well on the test itself.

Procrastinating

For example, the student who can’t bring herself to study knows where she should spend her time.

Their inability to effectively manage their time stems from a failure to execute their plans.

Procrastination, in some ways, is even worse than not planning your time at all. Commitments made by procrastinators are difficult to keep.

It is common for procrastinators to lose their friends and family members because of this.
